I suddenly remembered my list. Of course, I had left it in the car and I ended up having to shop from memory, while being distracted by all sorts of dollar store merchandise that I was sure we needed, and somehow ended up in my half full cart.

When I was about three quarters of the way through the store, my cell phone rang. It was my husband asking that I cut my shopping short as an unexpected visitor would be dropping by shortly. Grudgingly, I finished up my shopping and pulled my cart to the side to reassess my possible purchases and make sure I was within my preset limit of $20. What a joke! I had over $50 worth of dollar store merchandise piled in my cart. I was shocked! How could I have that much? This was a dollar store! I thought this was all about bargains!

The funny thing is, while driving home (having limited myself to a mere $27 worth of loot), I realized why dollar stores are so successful and why they are popping up all over the place: people don't seem to realize how quickly a large total adds up, even if the items are only a dollar a piece. You end up throwing all caution to the wind, resulting in a cart full of poorly made, unneeded merchandise that you simply can't resist. The very concept of dollar stores is based on the premise of impulse buying. Our inability to resist a bargain is driving this success and padding their pocketbooks with our hard earned dollar bills!!

Of course, the one impediment to dollar stores success, are the few among us who can resist the lure of getting a deal, in the name of ethics. It has become quite widely publicized that most dollar store merchandise is so cheap because it is made in third world countries in sweatshops often employing young children. This is a sobering thought to anyone coming across this information. Whether it's enough to stop each one of us in our pursuit of a bargain, comes down to a personal decision.

Used everywhere in the world today, the ballpoint pen has all but completely replaced fountain pens and other ink writing utensils. Like all pens, ballpoint pens contain an internal reservoir of ink, which they then dispense onto any surface in which the tip of the pen comes in contact with. Ballpoint pens rely on a suction action created by a spinning ball bearing at their tip, to draw out ink that would otherwise not flow through a pen. The original concept of the ballpoint pen orginates with man named John J Loud, who took a patent out on his idea in 1888. The ballpoint wouldn’t make another appearance until 1938, when a Hungarian journalist named Laszlo Biro would stumble across the idea. I must confess though, that I haven’t yet laid the flashlight on the ground and tried to drive over it. However, the housing of my “as seen on tv” flashlight is very sturdy. I think it just might survive.

My “as seen on tv” product is not perfect. The light doesn’t last forever and I don’t like to keep shaking just to be able to see. And yet, I have the perfect place for this light in my car. If I am ever stuck in the dark, I can be assured that I will always have some light easily available.
