Getting Dollar Store Merchandise

Let's face it. The Dollar Store is a great place to shop. You get quality cheap merchandise for a fraction of the cost you'd pay at a regular retail store. Below is an article on how to find Dollar Store merchandise and where it comes from.

Dollar Store Merchandise

One of the most popular retail store concepts to catch on like wildfire in both large and small communities is the Dollar Store.

People love getting a deal and are sick and tired of paying inflated prices for merchandise that is quickly consumed and likely took mere pennies to make. This mindset feeds the concept of the Dollar Store. These stores are popping up all over. If you visit one on a Saturday afternoon, you will likely find a frenzy of activity from people from all walks of life. Baskets and carts are regularly piled high with dollar store merchandise, ranging from craft materials and coloring books to picture frames, kitchen accessories and even pet supplies. People adore getting a bargain and this craze is far from cooling off.

About a week ago I went to our local dollar store to pick up a few things. I made a list before going because I know how easy it is to spend a lot more money than intended due to an inability to resist the fantastic bargains of dollar store merchandise. I capped my spending at $20.00 before entering the store and tried to move as quickly as possible through the aisles of items just begging to be looked at. Of course, the very first aisle was jammed full of all sorts of toys, coloring books and novelty items. By the end of the first aisle I already had five or six items in my cart. I quickly moved on.

In the next row I was bombarded with all assortment of craft supplies. My little daughter is an aspiring artist and will resort to hacking up newspapers and magazines if I dare let her run out. So I loaded a bunch of colored paper and markers into my cart.

I suddenly remembered my list. Of course, I had left it in the car and I ended up having to shop from memory, while being distracted by all sorts of dollar store merchandise that I was sure we needed, and somehow ended up in my half full cart.

When I was about three quarters of the way through the store, my cell phone rang. It was my husband asking that I cut my shopping short as an unexpected visitor would be dropping by shortly. Grudgingly, I finished up my shopping and pulled my cart to the side to reassess my possible purchases and make sure I was within my preset limit of $20. What a joke! I had over $50 worth of dollar store merchandise piled in my cart. I was shocked! How could I have that much? This was a dollar store! I thought this was all about bargains!

The funny thing is, while driving home (having limited myself to a mere $27 worth of loot), I realized why dollar stores are so successful and why they are popping up all over the place: people don't seem to realize how quickly a large total adds up, even if the items are only a dollar a piece. You end up throwing all caution to the wind, resulting in a cart full of poorly made, unneeded merchandise that you simply can't resist. The very concept of dollar stores is based on the premise of impulse buying. Our inability to resist a bargain is driving this success and padding their pocketbooks with our hard earned dollar bills!!

Of course, the one impediment to dollar stores success, are the few among us who can resist the lure of getting a deal, in the name of ethics. It has become quite widely publicized that most dollar store merchandise is so cheap because it is made in third world countries in sweatshops often employing young children. This is a sobering thought to anyone coming across this information. Whether it's enough to stop each one of us in our pursuit of a bargain, comes down to a personal decision.

So, what do you think? Dollar store merchandise is cheap and good, but should we persue products that others might have slaved over to make?
